More to Life

I have to say that I’m kind of glad that there’s a recession going on. I know that there are a lot of people out of work right now, (technically, I’m one of them) and many are hurting. But I think this reality check is helping us take a collective look at life in general.

It seems as though people are looking for alternative income sources to wean themselves away from the evil credit card companies. They want to pay down their debt, eliminate their mortgage, and live a more simplified life. It’s nice, actually.

I saw this change recently in a cheesy hotel seminar. It was one of those things in the Hilton ballroom where I got a free lunch and they were going to tell me everything I needed to know about setting up a website and making enormous income online. Yes, I already know much more than what they were offering, but every now and again I like going to these events just for fun.

The presenters had a very slick powerpoint presentation, complete with ostentatious homes, luxury cars, and showing how we can all live the American Dream. I heard many mumblings from the audience showing that people were just turned off by this display of wealth. Afterwards, I talked to a few different people who were astonished that the presenters focused so much on obtaining trinkets and things, rather than creating their own security.

I can’t be sure, of course, but I have a feeling that this particular group lost a lot of potential customers due to their garish display of wealth. It seemed as though more people were running for the doors, rather than running to SIGN UP NOW!

Tsk. Who cares if I have 5 yachts if I can’t get food on the table? Seriously, people…get a clue.
